World Book Day writing ideas….

It’s World Book Day today.

You could celebrate by dressing up, by reading a book or by beginning to write your own masterpiece. If that feels too big, here are some small ways to use books for writing.

  1. Open the ninth book on a bookshelf and open it to page 9. Write down the ninth sentence and use it to begin your own story. (Or try another random number.)

  2. Write down the ninth word on line nine of nine books and see if you can write a story including all of the words.

  3. Find a selection of books and see if you can order them so that the titles tell a story or make a poem.

  4. Take the opening line of someone else’s story and use it to start your own.

  5. Read the blurb on the back of a book that you haven’t read and see if you can write an opening page. You could try this with friends and guess which one is the right opening.

  6. If you have a really old book, you could use it to do some blackout or found poetry (see Day 13)
