Writing for Wellbeing

In the autumn I completed a course in Using Writing for Therapeutic Purposes with The Writers’ Academy which has ignited a long-held ambition to run  more workshops with a more explicitly therapeutic purpose.

I’ve used writing for my own self-development inadvertently throughout my life and, since I trained as a life coach, I have found some coaching techniques creeping into my writing workshops. I’ve also become a fan (along with the rest of the world) of mindfulness and noticed as soon as I started learning about the subject, that writing is, in my opinion, a form of mindfulness in itself. When we’re writing we are often in the moment, in a state of flow and focusing our awareness, if not on our breath, then on our surroundings, engaging all of our senses, settling our minds.

I’ve also found that writing has been my anchor during the last year of intense grief over the loss of my partner and I’m exploring ways to continue to work with grief and writing in future workshops. What’s more, I remember discussing future aspirations with my partner and talking about my ambition to do more writing for wellbeing courses, which somehow makes it feel more important to take the plunge.

So, I’m starting gently with a Writing for Wellbeing course at The Art House in Sheffield on Saturday 18th February. My aim is to provide people with a safe space to explore themselves and their writing but mostly, to allow people to be playful and leave with their energy rejuvenated.
